It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of former Ladies and Men's Coach, Damien “Damo” Mooney. A much-loved and hugely important part of Lichfield Rugby Club and pivotal to the Lichfield Ladies story.

Damo’s contribution to the club was extraordinary. Through his hard work, passion and belief, he helped shape a team, a culture and a spirit that so many people still carry with them today. He was instrumental in taking Lichfield Ladies from near the bottom of the Premiership in the 2002/03 season to Premiership Shield winners and fifth place by 2008/09 — a journey built on commitment, standards, togetherness and heart.

He attracted people to Lichfield and made them want to stay. He encouraged players to believe in themselves, pushed them to be better, and helped create an environment where talent could thrive — including players who went on to represent their country. But for all that he gave to the game, his greatest impact was on the people around him.

Those who knew him will remember the humour, the loyalty, the car sweets, the cage, the unforgettable training sessions and the countless moments that became part of Lichfield folklore. They will also remember his kindness — the quiet, generous acts that showed the measure of the man: giving up his time, helping people when they needed it, and doing things for others simply because he could.

Damo gave Lichfield Ladies more than results. He gave us belief, standards, memories, laughter and a sense of belonging. He helped build a team with spirit, energy and real heart — and that legacy will live on in everyone who was lucky enough to be part of it. Damo went on to coach the Senior Men’s side and was the recipient of the John Williamson Trophy in 2015-16.
Our thoughts are with Damo’s family, friends, former players, teammates and everyone whose life he touched. He will be remembered with love, gratitude and enormous respect.

The Funeral Service is on Thursday 17th September at 1:15pm, Coychurch Crematorium, Bridgend road, Coychurch Bridgend CF35 5EJ followed by the wake at Heol y Cyw Rugby Club, Heol y Cyw Bridgend.
