An epic day in the sun saw 16 teams competing as live rugby returned to Cooke Fields. The weather played its part and an excellent day of 7's rugby was observed by all who attended.
The Bowl was won by Trentham, the Plate by Spartans and the cup by Lichfield!
Lichfield had two sides in the event, the Red side being led by Tom Day lost to Spartans in the semi-final of the Plate competition. Strong performances were seen in there from a side made up of youngsters making their adult debuts and some more experienced senior players. Well done to Cam Robertson, Paddy Fitzgerald, Eddy Kilminster and Cameron Williams who made their adults debuts on the day.
The Lichfield Green side also had some 18 year olds making their way in adult rugby with Woody Pugh and Matt Hurley continuing their impressive starts to adult rugby after the event at Rugeley last week, both playing pivotal roles in the teams success. Another 18 year old, Tom Coton, was undoubtedly the player of the day with eleven tries across six games including the cup winning score in the final with the clock in the red. The final try of the day secured a 22-19 win over Burton after the visiting team looked like they had secured the trophy after taking the lead for the first time in the game with only 20 seconds remaining. Lichfield kept their cool however, with their experienced players moved the ball to the edge and it was the youngsters who did the rest, Matt Hurley making the outside break before finding Tom Coton with an offload on the inside to finish it under pressure from 40 metres.
Thank you to all the clubs and spectators who supported the event, it was a great day of rugby and we look forward to seeing you all again in the near future as rugby continues to return.
