Seven try thriller sees Lichfield throw off their shaky season start

A gloomy Cooke Fields welcomed Whitchurch this Saturday for Lichfield's 5th match of the 2019 season.

The 2019 season had seen Lichfield succumb to two defeats, but this revitalised team has a self-belief, after wins against Stourbridge and Sutton, hopes were high and the team did not disappoint.

Just two minutes after kick-off Tom Penzer-Adams crossed the line, the conversion was missed, but Lichfield tails were up.

Charlie Milner replaced Jon Doubleday due to an injury just ten minutes into the game, however this seemed to have little effect on the Myrtle Greens and eleven minutes later Paul Maxwell-Keys crossed the line for the first of his two tries, the second coming just after the second half restart.

Ten minutes later Matt Cowley scored a great individual try and ten minutes after that Richard Burton added to the total, the conversion was good and Lichfield were well ahead.

Soon after Lichfield were caught napping after the last try and a powerful maul from Whitchurch saw Steve Brook gain the line and score.

After the restart there was fifteen minutes of running rugby football with neither side managing to break the line, a short break for a Whitchurch HIA rightly interrupted the play, until a few minutes from the end of the game which saw two tries came in quick succession from Dan Rowlands and Callum Turner and the game was done.

Head Coach, Dan Hemingway

"Great to get a third win in a row, the boys have worked really hard defensively and it’s really shown through the last few weeks.

I thought Whitchurch fought really well with a very young side, they made life difficult for us first half and it took us some time to adapt. We are improving every week at adapting and that’s great to see."

The final score 39-5 to Lichfield.

Lichfield's next game is Droitwich away on the 12th October.
