WEEKEND ROUND UP
Weekend 3RD & 4TH May 2025
LUTTERWORTH 57 LICHFIELD 14 PTS (PAPA JOHN’S QTR FINAL – LEG 2)
The club’s two men’s teams could not find success in either of last weekend’s games and both sides had parallel problems, dealing with an opposition pack with more bulk and size, as well as being well drilled. In both cases, Lichfield played the youth card quite extensively, especially in the 2s, who have found bigger sides a test all season in their league campaign.
For the opening 25 minutes, the 1st XV game was once again punch and counter punch with the score at 14 points apiece. However, the game then went away from Lichfield as the home side started to monopolise possession and we witnessed a repeat of the Justin Trombas/Harry Wood show. Both are talented runners with the ball and know exactly when to introduce themselves to that phase of the game, with great effect. The former helped himself to four tries, including one from his own ‘’22’’ purely based on his pace, whilst captain Wood scored three, as well as making a couple. Wingers, Thomas Wood and Jake Maclellan, added the other two tries, whilst Harry Read had a slightly less positive day with the boot, kicking six from nine.
There was no lack of effort from the Lichfield squad throughout what became a long, tiring afternoon. Paul Maxwell-Keys scored both the visitor’s tries from multiple phase attacks with Josh Butler adding the extras. Thereafter, Lutterworth were able to find enough defensive cover to comfortably earn themselves a home semi final against Rochdale this Saturday.
LICHFIELD 2s 26 NEWCASTLE 2s 32 PTS (STAFFS CENTENARY CUP FINAL)
The 2s’ match at Stoke RFC ebbed and flowed to keep a decent sized crowd entertained. The Newcastle pack were much the bigger and they consequently were able to relieve pressure with their beefy scrum well on top, which became a crucial factor. Despite this, Lichfield chased this county final gamely, yet were not quite able to engineer one last try in the closing ten minutes, despite loads of pressure on the Newcastle defence.
There were tries for Tom Day, James McKenzie, Joe Bourne and Harry McDonough and George Butler, on his senior debut, added three conversions.
So, no cup success for either of the men’s teams, however, the main target of winning the league was achieved by the men’s senior side last month, winning 20 from 22 games. The women’s Red team came second in their Championship 1 North league and hence were involved in the play offs, whilst the club’s other sides earned four victories in the county cup finals during March and April. There will be added tests next season, but from a healthy base.
