WEEKEND ROUND UP | SATURDAY 31ST AUGUST
Thornbury made the trek from Bristol on Saturday to provide the opposition to the men’s and the women’s squads, as well as the colts, and joined in fully with the fun and entertainment of the day on and off the pitch to make it another thoroughly enjoyable day at Cooke Fields. They won two of the games narrowly, but were completely outplayed by the women of Lichfield, who were a mixture of the Red and Green squads, winning 101-0.
A northerly wind contributed to much of the play in the men’s game being played down the clubhouse end. Thornbury had first use of it and therefore were leading at half time with Lichfield also taking a time to get their systems and processes functioning. Once again the home side were able to give valuable game time to over 25 of their squad, which will aid the situation when the leagues start this coming Saturday against Old Saltleians.
In the end, Thornbury won 31-29 on the back of two rather soft tries in the last 15 minutes after ‘’Lich’’ had had plentiful possession and territory for a lot of the second period. Nevertheless, they did manage five tries from David Mott, Charlie Milner and Kai Lucas-Dumolo in the first half, followed by two converted ones from Chad Southam (the kicker) and Sam Benson. Thornbury had added three conversions to their five tries to win the day.
In the women’s game, Thornbury, who have just been promoted to the level below the Lichfield Red team, could not cope with the variety and continuity of the Lichfield play and, in particular, the pace of the home outside backs. The visitors were gutsy in defeat and fully joined in the post match activities despite the score line. It was not the ideal preparation for the Lichfield squad, but it was a blow out and will aid their efforts to be ready for the upcoming league programme, which starts on 15 September with the Red team away at Bishop Auckland and the Green team at home to Crewe & Nantwich.
The colts game was a full bloodied and, at times, feisty affair, despite it being just a pre season friendly. Thornbury held on to win 14-5 (2 tries to one), probably benefiting from having limited numbers to chose from, whilst the Lichfield coaches rang the changes to provide match time for 44 members of this competitive squad. It was a much better form check for the Lichfield players after the Burton warm up game proved to be too one sided.
So, Lichfield 1s are away at Old Saltleians, newly promoted to our league, with KO at 3pm this coming Saturday (7th). The 2nd XV are now in an official RFU league (three levels below the 1st XV) and their first outing is also away at Old Salts, their KO time is 1:30pm. The ground is on Coleshill Road, Water Orton B46 1 QE and all support to both sides is fully appreciated.
The women have another warm up game at home to Cannock on Saturday, starting at 2:30pm, whilst the colts have two games arranged for this weekend with a floodlit game at Melbourne on Friday evening at 7:30pm and then the second one is at Old Halesonians on Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm. This is in preparation for our colts two sides starting league action on 15 September. The Red team remain in the top division of North Midlands league with the Green team two levels below.
