Lichfield U12s welcomed Sutton Coldfield to King Edward VI School on Sunday morning, with the recent wet weather making the club pitches unplayable.
The visiting squad were as strong and well-organised as expected, from our matches over previous seasons. The Sutton backline started brightly and after some strong carries passed their way around the Lichfield defence to open the scoring in the corner.
Lichfield initially struggled to match the physicality of their opponents and repeatedly lost possession in a number of key areas, with Sutton able to keep Lichfield firmly on the back foot. However, as the morning progressed the Lichfield team stuck to their task and began to compete far better in all areas of the pitch.
James Thomas (Inside Centre) epitomised the Lichfield U12s spirit towards the end of the contest. Following some excellent work from the Lichfield forwards, he was released to crash through the Sutton defence with an unstoppable run from 15m out, scoring his maiden try for the U12s and taking several Sutton players over the line with him.
All the Lichfield players gave maximum effort throughout the morning and were continually encouraged by some fantastic home support.
We look forward to next matchday which is the Lichfield Mini Junior festival on 20th March.
