Under the floodlights, in relentless rain and properly testing conditions, Lichfield U12s put out two teams tonight against Burntwood and Uttoxeter — and what unfolded was nothing short of unforgettable.

On the first-team pitch, the game had everything grassroots rugby should be about: driving rain, slippery ball, heavy collisions, and boys digging deep for each other. The weather didn’t dampen spirits — it elevated the occasion. This was one of those nights that players and parents will talk about for years.

Both Lichfield sides battled relentlessly. Handling in those conditions was brave. Defence was committed. Support play was tireless. There were some genuinely outstanding individual performances — but what stood out most was the collective effort. Line speed in defence, scrambling tackles, second efforts, and the willingness to carry hard into traffic defined the evening.

The coaches were immensely proud — not just of the scorelines or the rugby played — but of the character shown. Nights like this don’t come around often in a rugby career. Playing under lights, in torrential rain, with teammates emptying the tank beside you — those are the moments that shape young players.

It’s a special group. The environment being built around this age group is exactly what junior rugby should be: competitive, supportive, tough, and full of camaraderie. If this is a sign of what tour might look like… we may need to brace ourselves.
