Bromsgrove u13s were the visitors to Cooke Fields this week, bringing the usual high standard of rugby that we’ve come to expect from their squad.
The teams battled things out over 4 x 15 mins periods, to allow as many players in each squad to experience some match day action as possible.
From the kick-off Lichfield u13s demonstrated that their recent hard work in training on defence was paying off - repelling the expected onslaught from then Bromsgrove players and impressively forcing a turnover on their own try-line. However, the attempted clearance kick from Lichfield was then expertly charged down by the visitors and a Bromsgrove player dived onto the loose ball to open the scoring.
Although numerous Bromsgrove attacks were stopped in their tracks by a very determined and physical Lichfield defence, the visitors had the best of each period. As the morning progressed, the Lichfield players gained confidence with the ball in hand.
In the final period Lichfield created a fantastic overlap on the right wing through DC. With the Bromsgrove defence over-committed he then played the ball back inside to Devan, who was running the perfect support line to score a late consolation try for the home side in the corner.
The Bromsgrove coaches were quick to acknowledge that the scoreline flattered them after a very close match, saying that the Lichfield squad had given them as tough a test as they could remember over the previous few seasons. High praise indeed from an extremely talented Bromsgrove squad and a clear indication of the progress made in recent weeks by Lichfield u13s.
The post-match food was enjoyed together by both squads in the upstairs bar, to finish another fantastic morning of junior rugby at Cooke Fields.
