Lichfield and Chesterfield vs Burton

John Greener30 Mar - 20:40

Some excellent rugby on a windy day in Burton

Today saw the U12s travel to Burton for a great day of rugby. Chesterfield made the journey to partner up in what became three mini games, with each team splitting to make up numbers for the others. The Lichfield girls continued to improve and grow in consistency, both in attack and defence. With numbers a little down this week, all players had to step up to work hard for each other. The passing was excellent and despite some very windy conditions, they moved the ball around with confidence. We asked them to play with high energy and physicality and both were seen in abundance. They saw the benefits of their hard work in getting off the defensive line quickly forcing errors from the opposition. In attack, the breakdown remains a solid part of our game, and we saw much less ball lost in contact than we did previously against a very good Burton defence.

This week's Captains were Megan and Freya. Megan had a great game and was fearless in the rucks, on more than one occasion she pushed Burton girls back and won turnovers. She was sadly denied an amazing length of the field try. Freya played well at Scrum Half and controlled the game well around the breakdowns. Her link up play with Amelia outside her at 10, was impressive to see. Phoebe's hooking continues to be a weapon which we continue to exploit. She also drew two defenders in to release Caitlin for a great try. Caitlin made several amazing line breaks, getting behind the defensive lines with her powerful running. Elyza made her debut and made a great start. She showed an impressive level of rugby intelligence to ensure she was in the right place to receive the ball and make her first competitive tackle. Eveie had another strong game with ball in hand and drew in defenders to create space for others. Finally, this week's player of the match was Amelia who, following time away with an injury, played at an exceptionally high tempo both in attack, where she always sought space to run into, and in defence put in some crunching tackles.

Thank you to our amazing families for continuing to support the girls, even on Mother's Day!
